Sedation Dentistry For Your Child’s Comfort

Helping Kids Overcome Dental Anxiety And Fear

If your child has dental anxiety, even a simple visit to the dentist for a checkup or a filling can be super stressful. And we get it! That’s why, at Pediatric Dental Studios, Dr. Jimmy Gibson offers sedation dentistry for kids of all ages.

With multiple sedation options available at our office in McDonough, GA, we can make sure your child has a positive experience at our office. Whether they just need a little bit of help relaxing or you want them to sleep through their visit, Dr. Jimmy and our team can provide your little one with the expert care they need.

The Benefits Of Sedation Dentistry

  • Less stress for kids (and parents) – We know how stressful it can be to deal with dental anxiety in kids. With sedation, you can assure your child that they won’t feel any anxiety, pain, or discomfort during their visit with Dr. Jimmy.

  • Enhanced cooperation – If your child has trouble sitting still or working with doctors and dentists, sedation can make things easier. Your child will be able to relax and cooperate with Dr. Jimmy and our dental team.
  • Faster, more efficient visits – Because your child will be more cooperative, our team can typically provide faster, more efficient care. This is particularly helpful if your child needs multiple treatments at once, such as several fillings to repair decayed teeth.
  • Helps with fear of needles – Even the bravest kids can feel anxious when they get a numbing shot in their gums. If your little one really doesn’t like needles, sedation dentistry is super helpful!

  • Ideal for special needs patients – Dr. Jimmy has the training and experience necessary to provide sedation for kids of all ages and of all abilities, and this includes special needs patients.

Our Sedation Dentistry Options

Laughing gas (nitrous oxide)

If your child only needs a little bit of help relaxing at the dentist, nitrous oxide (also called “laughing gas”) is a great option. In this type of sedation, Dr. Jimmy will put a comfortable mask over your child’s nose. Then, they will breathe in a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide, which will take effect right away.

Your child will feel relaxed, “floaty,” and a little bit disconnected from what’s happening around them. However, your child will remain fully awake, responsive, and able to answer questions. Another great thing about laughing gas is that it wears off after about five minutes, so your child can get right back to their normal day-to-day routine.

Deep IV sedation

IV sedation is the best option for very anxious kids. It uses a mixture of sedative drugs that are delivered right into your child’s bloodstream through an IV. With IV sedation, your child will sleep through their entire procedure, and they are unlikely to remember any of it.

However, they won’t be “knocked out” or unconscious. If necessary, your child can be woken up, and there’s no need for any type of breathing machine. Once your child’s visit is over, they will likely be groggy and confused for a few hours. Nausea, headaches, and dry mouth are also common after IV sedation. You’ll need to take things easy for the rest of the day.

Is Sedation Dentistry Really Safe For Kids?

Yes. Complications are extraordinarily rare with dental sedation. Pediatric dentists like Dr. Jimmy undergo special training to make sure that they can sedate kids safely. We will make sure we discuss your child’s health history, any medications they're taking, and other details with you before approving them for sedation.

During their visit, our dental team will also keep a close eye on your child’s vital signs to make sure everything is proceeding normally. You can trust us to take great care of your little one, and to provide the safe sedation they need for a smooth dental visit at Pediatric Dental Studios.
